As part of my learning and writing journey, it's grateful to share my first writing of a short brand film analysis article with you.
I will present the film analysis by the following key points:
Key Messages
Setting
Character
Plot
Conflict Type
Resolution & one strength of the film.
Key messages
The film's key message is connection -connecting with people, human connectivity of hope, joy, and life sharing. People are better when they're together and associated with the community. Every little kindness, ride-sharing, and human connection can change a better society.
In the film, a lonely old widow, through driving for Lyft, learns how to start sharing her life and reconnecting with people, gaining her community back, and getting her meaningful and purposeful life.
Setting
The story setting is in the city of South Chicago, and the film context emphasises iconic neighbourhoods of Chicago, train tracks built over the roads, traffic routes, the weather, and the environment of Chicago city.
The hero's journey reflects many layers of the scale and the depth of the city's nature.
Every touch point setting in the film presents the horizon lines, circle shapes, and kaleidoscopic effects that create a sense of connection between the hero and people and every new touch point of the hero's driving journey.
It more naturally connects the hero, influences the character, and communicates with people who want to achieve something by sharing the story.
Characters
The main character protagonist in the film is a lonely old widow, June.
In the story's beginning, the character is a little saddened, an isolated type of living, closed off to the world, and less in touch with the community.
June's character nature is an Afro-American single mother out of necessity, not a social person but quite willing characteristic. After an unusual occurrence, she became a Lyft driver and started to inspire by sharing the ride and her life throughout the film.
In this film, the antagonist could be two events - the first was when the truck accidentally hit June's yellow car, causing damage, and the second was when the opposite lorry's reflective headlight caused June to have a road accident stuck in the snowbank.
Plot
June is an elderly widow living alone in Chicago. She doesn't socialize much, so her life is flat and lonely. At the beginning story, June drives her yellow car and parks on the side opposite the Salon. There suddenly happened, June's car got hit by the truck and destroyed. That brings June back to memories of her late husband and the car. After that, she purchases a new red car that represents a fresh start and an opportunity for new connections.
On her way back from getting her new car, when a Lyft passenger accidentally got in her car, she saw a woman in military uniform chasing a bus until she missed the bus, so she decided to give her a ride. Those facts make her want to open up her life as a Lyft driver. Because sharing makes her feel active and interact with people, it's become a doorway to connect and interact with a diverse group of people during her Lyft driving journey.
One snowy night, June braked sharply at a red light because of the truck's flashing headlights opposite her, causing her car to slide on the road and get stuck in a snowbank. The passenger waiting for June in a nearby coffee shop found June's location, so the passenger brought a group of people who helped June's car out of being trapped in the snow.
Eventually, June got rescued and continued her life as a Lyft driver. She shares her life, connects with people, and returns to her meaningful life by driving Lyft.
Conflict Type
Person vs. Self
The story revolves around June and her internal conflict with herself. Years of solitude cause her to be lonely, a little sad and disconnected from the community.
She struggles with herself but has yet to open herself willingly because she doesn't have an opportunity or happen to make herself open. There is an occurrence where sharing her ride with a female soldier; that's the first connection point that made her decide to be a Lyft driver and open herself up and change her way of life.
Resolution & one strength of the film
June hesitated to take a step to open herself and connect at first. But because of her lonely life, she willingly chooses to become a Lyft driver to get her life back. When she was in a minor snowdrift car accident, she felt helpless, but because of Lyft, she got rescued, which convinced her that sharing rides and connecting with people was the key to getting her life better back.
The film shows the value of the human community, sharing, and engaging action in geographical locations and settings. The film intends to connect to a diverse audience who value personal connection and community.
The soundtrack 'Moving' drew inspiration from interactions with passengers. It's part of the Chemosphere and one of the film's strengths. The vibrant colour of the animation and context feels heartwarming.
In conclusion, it gives a deep bond between a community and people who feel seen and valued and found a purpose in life. Once again, thank you for your time. I hope you enjoy this little article and have a great day.
